Hitchcock and the Auteur Theory

Definition of Auteur Theory
The theory holds that a film director is considered the primary creative force in a motion picture

What is an Auteur? An Auteur is someone who writes and directs the film, although it’s about the art and the artistic vision the person uses. A film auteur is usually a writer and a director who use unique and personal styles in their films, so when someone was to watch another film of that person they will instantly refer to that filmmaker.

The Auteur Theory
The Auteur Theory originated in France in the 1950s and promoted by a man called Francois Truffant wrote a essay which was entitled 'A Certain Tendency in French Cinema'. In this essay he claimed that film was a great medium for expressing the personal ideas of the director and suggested that the director should be regarded as an Auteur. To sum up it up the Auteur Theory is when the director oversees the Audio and the visuals and is then considered the Author (Auteur) rather than the actual screenwriter himself.

Hitchcock and the Auteur Theory
Hicthcock is one of the first names to pop up when looking into the Auteur Theory.

What makes Hitchcock an Auteur is that he uses styles in his films in which if it was saw in another film the viewers would instantly know that he directed it, because he always sticks to his unique styles. He was known to collaborate with the same people when making many of his films,  such as using the composer Bernard Herman who helped create the sound to Psycho, North by Northwest and Vertigo. By collaborating with all the people he has worked with previously he is creating a consistency within his filmography which could be necessary for auteur-ism.

Style
Hitchcock had a really unique style when it came to making his movies, he always used techniques which would be noticed as his own when watching other movies of his.

A style would be his Cameo appearances he does in his movies which he does a lot. What this does is gives the audience an instant thought once noticing him in the movie that its his movie because he has used this before and by doing this he is kind of marking his own territory to tell the audience that the movie is his and no other directors or writers.

Another style would be the way he allows the camera to take on human qualities so the audience feel as if they are uncovering the true story and allowing them to interact and solve the mysteries within story. He also likes to fill in scenes with no dialogue, with a point of view shot so that the audience can see what the character is seeing.

Characters
Hitchcock was known to use male and female characters in his movies rather similar, as he makes his characters opposite to what the audience would expect as he uses female characters and makes them dangerous blondes who like taking risks and when it comes to the male characters he likes making them lovable and really caring when it comes around to their mothers so they are less risk taking than the female characters, as for nowadays you would get the opposite kind of characters in movies such as the female are all caring and less risk taking as for the males they would take any risk coming at them.

Conclusion
After looking in to what makes Hitchcock an auteur i am coming to the conclusion that he is 100% certainly an auteur as he always uses his own techniques to make a film noticed, as his own film even if it means making his own cameo appearances, makes it obvious that its his film, he will always be noticed by using his own camera techniques or his use of characters. Also i would say he is an auteur as nearly every young director nowadays love his work and finds his work influential.
